In the United States, the first Covid-19 death had previously been thought to be on Feb. 26 in Seattle, one of the worst-hit cities in the country.
The finding that a death on Feb. 6, in Santa Clara County, Calif., was a result of the virus pushes the time frame of the virus’s spread in this country weeks earlier than was previously known, at least into January and perhaps even earlier, local officials say.
Santa Clara County was one of the first jurisdictions in the country to urge its residents to remain in their homes to slow spread of the virus. On March 16, President Trump issued national guidelines recommending that Americans stop unnecessary travel and avoid bars, restaurants and groups of more than 10 people.
